MANY STUDENTS KIDNAPPED AS BANDITS ATTACK GOVERNMENT COLLEGE IN NIGER STATE.

• The security challenges in Nigeria appears to have escalated following a kidnapping incident in a government school.
• The gunmen said to be responsible for the attack have not disclosed the reason for their action.
• Many states in northwestern Nigeria have recorded an increase in attacks by bandits.

An undisclosed number of students have been reportedly abducted in a raid by suspected armed bandits on the Government Science College Kagara in Niger state.

Shehu Sani, a former Nigerian senator via Twitter on Wednesday, February 17, confirmed the attack on the school which is his alma mata.

The activist stated that some staff members of the institution were also abducted by armed men.

Sani said he has spoken with the principal of the school about the abduction.

He said:

”Early hours of this morning, Armed bandits stormed the Government Science College Kagara Niger State, my alma mata, and abducted some students and staff family members. I just spoke to the principal. This is the clip of one of my past visit to the School.”

PR Nigeria reported that the bandits in military uniforms attacked the school on Tuesday night, February 16, and overpowered the security guard, before whisking away the students.

The publication stated that while some students escaped after the raid, a headcount had been conducted at the school to ascertain the actual number of missing students.

Security agencies have reportedly launched an operation to rescue the students from their abductors.

Nigerian Air Force helicopters have reportedly been seen hovering in the air to track the location of the students.

Legit.ng recalls that this is not the first time Nigeria will be recording an incident of kidnapping in a government academic institution.

In December 2020, bandits abducted about 300 boys from their school in Kankara, Katsina state.

Reports recently emerged that the leader of the bandit gang responsible for that abduction Auwalun Daudawa, has surrendered to the state government.

According to The Guardian, Daudawa, during an amnesty programme on Monday, February 8, opened up about his crime and surrendered a lot of weapons used in the operation that caused both local and global outrage.
